Our fellowship as believers is a spiritual reality because it’s forged by the Holy Spirit; however, this doesn’t mean our fellowship is mystical or ethereal. God’s Spirit is present and active in the ordinary and mundane realities and experiences of daily life. The fellowship of believers is a concrete, personal reality. Consider 2 John 1:12: “Though I have much to write you, I would rather not use paper or ink. Instead I hope to come to you and talk face to face, so that our joy may be complete.” John was not content with the mere thought of Christian fellowship. He longed to see his brothers and sisters in Christ face to face. Only then would his joy be complete. Again, the Apostle Paul laments his brother’s physical absence when he writes Timothy, “I long see you, that I may be filled with joy” (2 Tim 1:4).
The first community of believers was devoted to the fellowship, which means they were personally committed to being together and to loving and caring for one another (see Acts 2:42-47). Likewise, as a local community of believers, we’re personally committed to being together and to loving and caring for one another. Our covenant groups are an expression of this commitment to fellowship. Because we’re committed to this fellowship, we want to see every member of our congregation connected to a covenant group, so that increasingly we may know the joy of seeing one another face to face. Let’s not neglect meeting together. Let’s be devoted to the fellowship, so that we may “stir one another up to love and good works,” that our joy may be complete (Hebrews 10:24-25).
